About South Bay
Welcome to South Bay Elementary!
We are the home of the Bruins and serve kindergarten through 5th grade in Lacey, WA. Our mission is for South Bay students to be kind, respectful, responsible, engaged, and safe. We strive to foster learning in a positive, exciting way to help our students achieve their fullest potential. Creativity is nurtured, individuality is respected, and each child gains a feeling of self-worth and accomplishment.
Our school envisions a future where every student consistently meets high standards, is driven by a love of learning, and is supported by a cohesive and collaborative team of educators.

Goals & School Improvement Plan
Academic Gap Goal
The percentage of grade 1 students receiving multi-language learner support demonstrating proficiency in word reading will increase from 40% in the fall to 60% by spring of 2025 as measured by the easyCBM.
Behavior or Social-Emotional Learning Gap Goal
Reduce the number of classroom referrals by 30% over the next school year, decreasing referrals from 698 to 488 or fewer through the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), social-emotional learning (SEL), and targeted behavioral interventions.
School Improvement Plan
South Bay Building History
South Bay Elementary was built in 1949 on 17 acres. It is located at 3845 Sleater-Kinney Road NE. The 46,278 square foot building includes 27 instructional spaces, plus 8 portable classrooms and an 8-classroom modular building.
- In 1981, the original building was demolished, and a new building was attached to the 1976 addition.
- In 2000, the older wing was modernized, the entire building was reroofed, and upgrades were made to the library and administration area.
- In 2008, an 8-classroom modular building was added to campus.
- In 2008-2009, a major modernization was completed, including additions, utilizing 2006 bond and state assistance funds. All mechanical, electrical and technology were replaced or upgraded. The fire suppression system utilizes three 35,000 gallon tanks repurposed from the old Olympia Brewery.
